I've written about my adored collection of (almost vintage) Victoria Magazines a few times over the years here at "Tales".  For all the times I've looked through them, I never tire of them.  (If only people were that way...)  I just brought out my stack of November issues, ranging from 1990-2002, and found that I have some duplicates, November 1996 being one of them.

It's a gorgeous issue featuring articles such as "A Colette Pilgrim's Progress" by Judith Thurman for all my fellow Francophiles, an article on "Creating A Timeless Toy" featuring English toymaker Tom Cobley, "Come Gather At Our Table" just in time for Thanksgiving, and, my favorite, painstakingly scanned & researched in the above photo collection: "Fabrics We Love for Home & Fashion ~~ Houndstooth, Herringbone, Tweed & Twill".  It features some lovely treasures, many from Paul Stuart, who, "since 1938, has been the leading arbiter of taste, style, and fashion for luxury menswear in the United States".

All photos featured here by Toshi Otsuki. Taken on location at The Lord Thompson Manor in Thompson, CT (my childhood stomping grounds).

~~ If you'd like a chance to win a copy of this issue of
Victoria Magazine,
please leave a comment on this blog post.
The winner will be announced on
Monday, 18 November ~~

Autumnal Equinox 2012 Give Away

We are less than ten days away from one of my favorite days of the year:  the first day of fall, or the Autumnal Equinox to be more precise.  The fall and spring equinoxes are the only days of the year in which the Sun
crosses the celestial equator.  While I love the beautiful re-birth of the earth in the spring, my heart belongs to the fall...

A SUMMER AT TIFFANY

Summer at Tiffany by Marjorie Hart

"Be it a jewel or toy, not the prize gives the joy, but the striving to win the prize."
~ Owen Meredith (Edward Robert Bulwer-Lytton)

While true in many instances of life, this may be one exception to Sir Bulwer-Lytton's poetic quote.  A few weeks ago I learned of a Give~Away via Lily Lemontree.  The host was Sarah of My Little Boudoir, and she was generous enough to host a give~away to win a signed copy of this fabulous book:

Summer at Tiffany
by Marjorie Hart.

Having a rare spare minute or two, I entered the give~away and spent a few hours day dreaming (while ironing, that is)  about how great it would be if I actually won...just the cover photograph had sent me reeling into old~world New York...

Half awake, waiting for the coffee to finish perking just after 6:00 o'clock this morning, I opened my "mail" and found this:

Hi Michelle,

Good evening. I wanted to let you know that you were selected (using
random.org) as the winner of the signed copy of "Summer at Tiffany" on
www.MyLittleBoudoir.com!
If you'd like to send me your mailing address, I will get it sent off to you
this week.
Here is the link for the post as a reminder:

Congratulations and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did! Thanks for your
support...

Best regards,

Oh joy of joys!!  The prize giveth the joy!
Thank you, My Little Boudoir, you made my day!

It's May, It's May! Time for a Give~A~Way!

Good Morning Everyone!  It's a lovely spring day here in Massachusetts and although I awoke to find no cream in the fridge for my beloved morning coffee I refuse to let that dampen my spirits!  Why so chipper?  Well, for one thing, it's May.

I love the month of May.  I think it's Vanessa Redgrave's fault.  What?  You have never heard the song entitled:  "The Lusty Month of May" ???

Camelot_2

If you have not, then you also have never seen "Camelot" have you?  Well,  May is the perfect month to do so!  If the play is not running anywhere near you, then I highly recommend renting the movie starring Sir Richard Harris and Ms. Vanessa Redgrave.  They are absolutely amazing together in this three hour epic drama~~so make sure you have the entire afternoon to do nothing but travel back in time to the days of Chivalry!

It was filmed in 1967 (which also happens to be the year I was born so maybe another reason I love it so much!)  over a period of three years.  It was quite the production in it's day~~the costume budget was over $2.5 million~~quite a chunk of change 40 years ago.  And it was worth every penny.  The medieval dresses and the knights in shining armor are a treat for any romantic!  The musical score is just beautiful (a favorite of JFK's when he lived in the White house).  There is a beautiful scene when Ms. Redgrave sings "the May song" as I call it and once you hear it I guarantee that every time the month of May rolls around you will find yourself humming this little tune!

I actually had the once in a lifetime experience of meeting Mr. Richard Harris!   As a gift to my friend Lisa for her high school graduation I took her to see "Camelot" on stage starring Richard Harris.  I will admit this was probably more of a gift to myself since I don't really think she had quite the Camelot obsession I had acquired by then.  Not only did we have amazing seats (I think we were in the 8th row!) but after the performance while we were waiting to get out of our blocked parking space he came out of the rear door of the Performing Arts Center and we actually met him and chatted for a bit!  Look:

100_2405 He signed my program!

100_2409 Twice!!

He was quite the gentleman~~I remember he had on a polka dot scarf and I just thought that was the coolest thing ever! (That is probably when I started wearing scarves, come to think of it!)  Can you make out the date on the program?  June 1987!   It was one of the last times he played King Arthur on stage and I am so thrilled I had the honor of seeing it!!

So on my rather short list of celebrities I have met, he is at the top of my list!!

100_2407 Here is my album and cassette~~I just found the album at the thrift store last week~~but it is not the movie soundtrack so I am still on the treasure hunt for the one with Mr. Harris & Ms. Redgrave.

Oh, and another reason May is exciting is that one year ago this month I took the big cyber step and began my on~line boutique The Red Velvet Shoe using TypePad as my host.  So to celebrate I will be hosting my First Blog Give~A~Way Vintage Style!  here at Tales From a Vintage Wardrobe!

Check back soon for more details!!
