The Sart is featuring a lovely lady wearing a great pair of vintage-looking sunglasses on his blog today, which reminded me about this great pair of vintage Foster Grants I picked up somewhere in my travels.  They are a wee bit tight on me, so I'll be offering them up in the shop as soon as I can determine the era.  Any information is most welcome...I know there are quite a few of you who love old glasses as much as me!

Heirlooms: Schiaparelli Hats & Shirl Miller Leather Bags

Summer is in full swing around here....apologies for the lack of posts but it's been a nonstop whirlwind of go, go, go with no signs of the pace slowing down.  A visit to my sister's for a family reunion sent me home with this lovely vintage Schiaparelli straw hat with black patent leather trim that once belonged to my grandmother, as well as three hat boxes chock full of more treasures from her closet.  (How she managed to hide them from me for the past 10 years is beyond me...)  I remember my grandmother wearing it to horse shows and other outdoor events that required fashionable shelter from the sun.  At the time, I had no idea it was a Schiaparelli providing such glamorous shade!

From another side of my (rather complicated) family I was overjoyed to receive this lovely Shirl Miller vintage clutch in embossed leather.

And of my own treasure hunting accord I came into possession of this rather fabulous vintage bar pump-decanter set that I am quite certain I will never be able to part with.

Hoping to be back soon...wishing you many lovely summer days and nights until then.

Bags & Bananas at The Market

I finally received my new camera, but the week of the bi-annual Top Shelf Flea Market III was not exactly the best time to get a new gadget to figure out, as I'm up to my ear lobes tagging items & treasures to bring to Boston on Sunday.  I read through about half of the online manual (I thought someone said this is a very simple camera to use?!) and snapped a few photos from my studio of what I've been working on.  The jewelry photos were snapped prior to reading anything and the quality is terrible, so my apologies ahead of time.

I'll be debuting a very small portion of a trunk full of vintage Banana Bob jewelry.  The company went out of business in the late 1990s, but in it's day made some lovely art deco & victorian inspired pieces with vintage and antique facets and findings.  Swarvovski crystals were used in many of the pieces, and most were hand crafted and hand painted, with many limited editions. The assortment I'm bringing to Boston Sunday are on the more casual side, but I am hoping to create a Vintage Jewelry floor in The Red Velvet Shoe and offering this gorgeous jewelry, as it has become highly collected & coveted.  If you are looking for a specific Banana Bob piece, please email me and I will gladly check my inventory for you.

(Here is a sample of some of the more glamorous Banana Bob line that I found online...I'm quite certain I have this set, or something very similar.)

Vintage Purses coming to The Top Shelf Flea III from The Red Velvet Shoe

Here is a collage of some of the purses I just packed up to bring along....I love the Etienne Aigner in the top left, it has such an equine look to it, and I won't be sad if it doesn't sell because, as you know, a girl can never have too many purses...The top right is a lovely paisley Margaret Smith / Gardiner Maine purse and the label, I believe, dates it to one of her earliest pieces from the 1940s.

Top Shelf Flea October 2010 (5)

You'll find that (and much, much more!) Sunday at The Top Shelf Flea Market in Somerville/Boston, MA ~~ doors open at high noon.  See you there!

(T)urban Sophistication

How do you wear a turban without feeling like your grandmother?  I pondered over this question for the last few weeks as I was preparing to list some vintage turbans in The Shoe.  This led to one of my favorite parts of my job: image search, which led me to this post.

How to wear a turban

I'm quite sure you agree there is nothing "grandmother-ish" about Kate Moss in this gold vintage turban designed by Stephen Jones which she wore rather well at the 2009 MET Costume Gala.

Carrie Bradshaw gold turban

Fast forward a bit, to May of 2010 and we saw Sarah Jessica Parker as Carrie Bradshaw in SATC 2 looking rather lovely in her gold turban with the Western Sahara Dunes as a very fitting backdrop.

Jennifer behr gold shimmer metallic turban

And then, in February of 2011 and we saw Jennifer Behr's gold metallic turban featured on The Zoe Report....(going for a mere $800)

Catherine Baba & how to wear a turban

And my favorite of all--Catherine Baba's perfect execution of how to wear a turban and not look like your grandmother.  Stunning, from head to toe!

Diamonds On The Soles Of Her Shoes

Elle April 2011 p. 166 The Smithsonian's Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum Exhibition Set in Style-The Jewelry of Van Cleef & Arpels
(photo credit: Elle April 2011 p.166)

"Since its opening on the Place Vendôme in Paris in 1906, Van Cleef & Arpels has played a leading role in style and design innovation. Its timeless pieces have been worn by style icons including the Duchess of Windsor, Grace Kelly and Elizabeth Taylor. This exhibition will explore the historical significance of the firm's contributions to jewelry design in the 20th century, including the establishment of Van Cleef & Arpels in New York with the advent of World War II. On view will be more than 350 works including jewels, timepieces, fashion accessories and objets d'art by Van Cleef & Arpels, many of which were created exclusively for the American market. The exhibition will examine the work through the lenses of innovation, transformation, nature as inspiration, exoticism, fashion and personalities, and will include design drawings from the Van Cleef & Arpels archives."  (Smithsonian)

Spring Color Story I ~ Vintage Orange Crush

Orange color story Spring 2011

I spent some time the last few days looking at some spring/summer colorful fashions and I guess it's safe to say Orange is IN!  Inspired and having always wanted to create some sort of Lookbook/Color Story around here, I went for it.

Spring at The Red Velvet Shoe - Orange- Vintage Crush

Here is a collage of 99% new vintage coming to The Shoe.  (I won't bore you with the details of trying to get Paint.Net to cooperate and my apologies for the blurries in it....I guess there is something to reading a program manual before you attempt to use it after all.)

Wondering what you're looking at?  That's a pair of vintage Panoramic coated lens binoculars, the centerpiece is a fabulous vintage J. Tiktiner shirtdress in a gorgeous batik print, to the right a lovely pair of vintage Thos. Cort Ltd Genuine Reptile pumps, a very Cleopatra~ish peignoir set by Gossard/Artemis in Gypsy Red with green & gold detail, the bag is a Koret faux reptile with adjustable strap, some great orange & cinnamon vintage gloves, a set of four vintage Vera placemats (I didn't know she made placemats either), and a fabulous vintage silkscreen Vera scarf in a Scandinavian Folk Art print.  Way over to the right, something for your man: a cotton/linen blend Kanaka tie made in Hawaii, and on the left we have an adorable vintage coral & gold beetle brooch and a vintage Kenzo Jungle olive green leather skirt made in France (which has the most amazing purple floral lining which I will possibly use in another Color Story inside out!)

Now getting it all out onto the floor is another story....see something you like?  Email me at theredvelvetshoe.com for details.

Highly Recommended: Kiel James Patrick

You know my penchant for old things borders on obsession, so when my "own private (vintage) Idaho" crosses paths with another living in their "own private (vintage) Idaho" .....it's like being introduced to a rib eye to go with my potato.  (If you're not getting my little story, click here.)

Meet Kiel.  He makes a living sewing on this antique Singer sewing machine.  I know, I know.  Yes, he is/was a model, but let's focus, ladies.  Take a good look at his studio...amazing, isn't it?

This is the cool stuff  he creates in his studio.

Croffix Sailing Belts.....

Vicker Leed headbands  ....it's hard to choose a favorite.

Another great reason to love Rhode Island....KJP.... inspired by classic New England Style.
